Thursday 6/15/17 — NYTimes Crossword No. 0511

“I gotta go handle some business. Gimme that shank.”
“Pardon me, Homeboy, but ‘shank’ is a verb. What you’ve got there is a SHIV.” (1D: Prison weapons)

Today’s themed pairs were moderately clever. 8D/20A: Comfortably inviting… or, phonetically, a clue to 20A [HOMEY] : [VEGETABLEGARDEN]. Get it? “Hoe me?” Mildly reasonable pun.
Next, 27D/29A: Somber… or, phonetically, a clue to 29A [GLOOMY] : [MODELAIRPLANE]; “Glue me.”
Finally, 50D/58A: Commodious… or, phonetically, a clue to 58A [ROOMY] : [LOSTOPPORTUNITY]; “Rue me.”
I usually love Thursdays, because they tend to be the most clever puzzles of the week. On a scale of one to Thursday, I rate this puzzle about a Tuesday and a half.
